In the first ODI of this series, when the hosts were deeply struggling, Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller set up the 116 runs partnership for the fifth wicket. While Miller scored 50 runs, Rassie van der Dussen remained not out on 123 runs off 134 balls (10 fours and 2 sixes), which was also his first ODI century. Also, Andile Phehlukwayo (29) and Kagiso Rabada (13*) made some useful contributions with the bat in the late moment of the first innings.
While South African bowlers struggled more than the first half of the second innings, Anrich Nortje (4/51) fired up with four quick wickets and brought back the hosts into the game. Later, Andile Phehlukwayo (2/56) bowled impressively in the death overs but the hosts just failed to win that ODI.
Pakistan pacers provided a great start in the first ODI but it ultimately faded away due to strong partnerships by the Proteas middle-order batsmen. Shaheen Shah Afridi (2/61) and Haris Rauf (2/72) got two wickets each but Faheem Ashraf was in full control with the ball in that innings as his bowling figures were 9-0-25-1.
During the chasing in that ODI series opener, captain Babar Azam scored his 13th ODI century (103) while opener Imam-ul-Haq scored 70 runs. Despite the shaky last moments, Faheem Ashraf managed to secure the victory on the final ball of the match.
